Description
The Isley Brothers are an influential American soul group originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, formed in the 1950s by brothers O'Kelly, Rudolph, and Ronald Isley. Initially performing gospel music with a fourth brother, Vernon (who died young), they rose to fame after moving to New York City and releasing their 1959 hit “Shout.” Throughout the 1960s and '70s, they achieved major success with songs like “Twist and Shout,” “This Old Heart of Mine,” and the Grammy-winning “It’s Your Thing.”
In 1973, younger brothers Ernie and Marvin Isley, along with brother-in-law Chris Jasper, joined, expanding the trio into a full band and launching a string of bestselling albums like 3 + 3 and The Heat Is On. After the group split in 1983, O’Kelly died in 1986, and Rudolph retired in 1989. Ronald and Ernie continued as a duo, scoring new hits into the 2000s, including “Contagious” from the album Eternal.
Spanning over seven decades, The Isley Brothers are the only act to chart hits in six consecutive decades, with over 18 million records sold in the U.S. They've received numerous honors, including induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1992), the Vocal Group Hall of Fame (2003), and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (2014).
