Awa Odori (the dance) stems from Bon Odori, a style of dance performed during Obon: the Japanese holiday for honoring the dead. It began as a Nenbutsu folk dance for welcoming the spirits. Each region of Japan has their own variation of the dance. Tokushima is known for their Awa Odori (the dance).
