Description
Track 4 from their fourth album “Aqualung” released in 1971 copyright Chrysalis Records. It was recorded at Island Studios and Morgan Studios in London and initially received mixed to above average reviews. It’s now considered their masterpiece and has been an influential album for the musicians that followed. Considered a concept album by critics because of the recurring theme of religion in several songs, the band denied that there was any attempt to write songs around a concept. The title song was inspired by Jennie Anderson’s photographs of homeless people near the Thames River in London. It reached the Top Ten in eight countries and achieved 3X Platinum status in the U.S. in 1989. Recorded from the first play of a new copy of “The 2011 Steven Wilson Stereo Remix” on 180g vinyl created to mark the album’s 40th anniversary. Written by Ian Anderson and produced by Ian Anderson & Terry Ellis. Featuring:
Ian Anderson - Lead vocals, acoustic guitar & flute
Martin Barre – Lead, rhythm & acoustic guitars & descant recorder
John Evan – Piano, Hammond B-3 organ & Mellotron
Jeffrey Hammond – Bass, alto recorder & background vocals
Clive Bunker – Drums & percussion
Special Guest:
Dee Palmer – Conductor & orchestral arrangements
As I did walk by Hampstead Fair I came upon Mother Goose
So I turned her loose as she was screaming
And a foreign student said to me, "Was it really true
There are elephants and lions too in Piccadilly Circus?"
Walked down by the bathing pond to try and catch some sun
Saw at least a hundred schoolgirls sobbing into handkerchiefs as one
I don't believe they knew I was a schoolboy
And a bearded lady said to me, "If you start your raving
And your misbehaving, you'll be sorry" yeah
Then the chicken-fancier came to play with his long red beard
And his sister's weird, she drives a lorry
Laughed down by the putting green, now I popped 'em in their holes
Four and twenty labourers were labouring and digging up their gold
I don't believe they knew that I was Long John Silver
Saw Johnny Scarecrow make his rounds in his jet-black mac
Which he won't give back, stole it from a snowman
As I did walk by Hampstead Fair I came upon Mother Goose
So I turned her loose as she was screaming
Walked down by the bathing pond to try and catch some sun
Must have been at least a hundred schoolgirls sobbing into handkerchiefs as one
I don't believe they knew I was a schoolboy
