Description

“The Song of Four Seasons” (四季歌) sung by Zhou Xuan (周璇) in the 1937 motion picture, “Street Angel” (馬路天使 ). It describes how the two sisters were displaced by the war in Manchuria and ultimately fell into the grips of the musician and his madam wife. It is sung in a traditional Chinese style. In the legend of Meng Jiang, the wife’s tears after her husband died during the construction of the Great Wall caused a portion of it to collapse to reveal his remains. The Chinese language does not have tense or plurals. If the title is interpreted to be “Street Angels,” then both sisters are considered to be angels. Spring arrives, a window filled with green,
a young maiden embroiders a pair of mandarin ducks.
Suddenly a heartless blow makes her start,
tearing the loving ducks apart.
Summer arrives, the willow fronds grow long,
the maiden drifts down the Yangtze River.
The scenery is so fine everywhere she roams,
but none matches the green sorghum of home.
Autumn arrives with the fine lotus fragrance,
every night she dreams of the home she left behind.
She awakens with no sign of her parents,
only the moon shines outside her window.
Winter arrives and snow blankets the land,
To keep her lover warm, she will send clothes made by hand.
Blood and flesh built the long Great Wall,
She could become a young Meng Jiang.
